Hazardous Waste Materials Day

2009 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was a Success!
A note from Lynda Herremans
Executive Director Mason-Lake Conservation District

Just wanted to thank all of you for pitching in to make it another successful HHW Collection!

Here are a few numbers as I know them:

Good job on collecting donations again! A total of $1190 was collected from participants on Collection Day. That's almost what we collected last year with many more cars!

We collected 6- 5 gallon pails of Household Batteries (This is down from last year's total, most likely due to AFFEW's efforts throughout the year). Manistee's numbers were up, they had 13 pails full.

We collected 350 gallons of used oil and 100 gal of used antifreeze for recycling.

Drug & Lab gave me an estimate of 15,000 pounds of pesticides & HHW for Mason County. This is less than the more than 20,000 we collected last year but still a huge amount.

We collected 20 automotive batteries.

We had 27 volunteers help out during the collection.

We had 230 cars representing 270 households, with every township, village & city represented. Of the 270 households, 73 were in the City of Ludington, 33 in Hamlin Twp. and 28 in Amber Twp. Last year we had 292 cars representing 362 households.

Thanks again to all of you, together we can make a difference!!
